New vs Refurbished Microscopes: ACCU-SCOPE and UNITRON vs Refurbished Olympus, Nikon, Leica and Zeiss
Coastal Microscopes › New vs refurbished microscopes
Short answer: buy a new ACCU-SCOPE or UNITRON when you need a known price, a 5-year warranty and current LED optics for routine clinical, teaching, culture or inspection work. Buy a refurbished Olympus, Nikon, Leica or Zeiss when you need research features those lines do not offer: motorization, DIC, confocal, TIRF, or compatibility with a lab standard you already own. Coastal Microscopes sells both from the same shop in Newport, Rhode Island, so we quote them side by side and tell you which one fits.

Why a dealer that sells both can answer this honestly
Most online microscope sellers only sell one or the other. New-only dealers will tell you refurbished is risky; used-only dealers will tell you new mid-range scopes are overpriced. Coastal has stocked refurbished research microscopes since 2018 and is an independent ACCU-SCOPE and UNITRON dealer for new systems. Our engineers service all of them. The guidance below is what we tell customers on the phone.
New vs refurbished at a glance
| New ACCU-SCOPE / UNITRON | Refurbished Olympus, Nikon, Leica, Zeiss | |
|---|---|---|
| Warranty | Manufacturer's 5-year limited warranty (1 year on cameras, power supplies and LED bulbs), handled by Coastal | Coastal's 180-day parts and labor warranty on US and Canada orders; refurbished confocals are guaranteed installable; objectives carry 30 days |
| Price | Fixed 2027 list price, 10% off on every Coastal order | Typically well below the original list price; varies with generation and configuration |
| Lead time | Usually ships from the factory within days to a few weeks | In stock items ship after final QC in Newport, often within a week |
| Optics | Current infinity plan achromat, Plan S-Apo and Plan Apo lines; LED illumination | Original manufacturer optics, including Plan Apo, DIC and oil lines not offered on mid-range new scopes |
| Motorization and automation | Mostly manual; EXI-1000 is the motorized inverted exception | Full range: motorized stages, nosepieces, focus, filter wheels, shutters |
| Confocal and advanced imaging | Spinning disk can be added to the EXI-1000 | Laser scanning and spinning disk confocal, TIRF, super-resolution, live cell systems |
| Parts and service | Factory parts supply; Coastal installs, trains and services | Coastal stocks parts and refurbishes; service from Coastal or the OEM depending on model |
| Software | ACCU-SCOPE and UNITRON camera software; Coastal adds Micro-Manager or VisiView on request | Micro-Manager, VisiView or StarLyte from Coastal; OEM software where licensed |
| Returns | 15 days on unopened items, no restocking fee | Per listing; ask Coastal before ordering |
When new ACCU-SCOPE or UNITRON is the right call
- Clinical, pathology and physician office labs. An ACCU-SCOPE EXC-400 or EXC-350 with plan achromat or Plan S-Apo objectives covers hematology, cytology, urinalysis and Mohs sign-out with a 5-year warranty and a known price for the purchasing department.
- Teaching labs and classroom fleets. Ten or more matching EXC-120, EXM-150 or EXS-210 units, all identical, all under warranty, is something a used dealer cannot supply.
- Routine tissue culture. An EXI-310 or EXI-410 with phase contrast and LED fluorescence is the value choice for checking flasks, dishes and well plates.
- Industrial inspection and QC. UNITRON Z645, Z850 and Z8 stereos, microFOCUS 4K digital inspection and Versamet 4 metallurgical microscopes are built for production floors and metallography labs, with ESD, boom stand and ring light options from the catalog.
- Government and university purchase orders. New equipment with a manufacturer warranty, a fixed quote and a SAM.gov registered small business vendor is the easiest path through procurement.
When refurbished Olympus, Nikon, Leica or Zeiss is the right call
- Research imaging. Motorized inverted stands for multi-channel fluorescence, live cell time lapse, DIC and TIRF live in the research lines from the Big Four. Coastal stocks refurbished research microscopes and confocal systems and tests every one in Newport before it ships.
- Confocal. If the project needs laser scanning or spinning disk confocal, a refurbished research stand with a new CrestOptics spinning disk unit, laser source and Hamamatsu camera is usually a fraction of a new confocal.
- Matching a lab standard. If the core facility runs Olympus BX or Nikon Eclipse Ti and your objectives, filter cubes and software are already bought, a refurbished stand of the same family protects that investment.
- Top-tier optics on a budget. Plan Apochromat, high-NA oil and silicone objectives and DIC prisms hold their value and are often only practical refurbished.
Coastal integration packages that mix the two
Because Coastal sells new ACCU-SCOPE stands and also carries cameras, light sources and stages from other manufacturers, we build packages competitors do not stock. Typical examples, quoted as a single line item with installation and training:
- EXC-500 fluorescence package: ACCU-SCOPE EXC-500 trinocular fluorescence stand, Excelitas X-Cite LED illuminator, filter sets, and a Hamamatsu, Teledyne Photometrics or Lumenera camera with acquisition software.
- EXI-410 live cell package: ACCU-SCOPE EXI-410, Okolab stage top incubator, Prior Scientific motorized XY stage, X-Cite LED and a Hamamatsu or Teledyne Photometrics camera.
- EXI-1000 spinning disk package: ACCU-SCOPE EXI-1000 motorized inverted with a CrestOptics X-Light V3 or CICERO spinning disk, laser source, Hamamatsu camera, Prior stage and Micro-Manager or VisiView.
- Z8 or Z10 fluorescence stereo: UNITRON CMO stereo with a NIGHTSEA fluorescence adapter for zebrafish, Drosophila and C. elegans screening, plus a camera for documentation.
Every package is assembled and tested in Newport, then installed on site or walked through on a video call with a Coastal engineer.
Trade in what you have
Coastal takes trade-ins of Olympus, Nikon, Leica and Zeiss microscopes and confocals toward new ACCU-SCOPE and UNITRON systems or toward refurbished research equipment. Send photos and model numbers and we quote the credit with the new system.
New vs refurbished questions
Is a refurbished microscope reliable?
A refurbished microscope from a shop that services the brand is. Coastal cleans, aligns and tests every stand, replaces worn parts and ships with a 180-day parts and labor warranty on US and Canada orders. Confocals are guaranteed installable.
Why not just buy a new Olympus or Nikon?
You can, and for some research applications you should. For routine clinical, teaching, culture and inspection work, an ACCU-SCOPE or UNITRON gives comparable optics at a much lower price with a longer warranty. Our series pages compare each model with its Olympus, Nikon, Leica and Zeiss equivalents.
Can Coastal service both new and refurbished systems?
Yes. Coastal installs, trains, does preventive maintenance and repairs on the ACCU-SCOPE and UNITRON systems it sells and on Olympus, Nikon, Leica and Zeiss research microscopes. Zeiss LSM confocals are serviced in house; other confocal brands are evaluated case by case. Service contracts are available from Coastal or the OEM depending on the model.
Can I get a quote for both options?
Yes. Tell us the application and budget and we send one quote with a new ACCU-SCOPE or UNITRON option and a refurbished option, with the differences spelled out.
