Zeiss LSM 780 Confocal Microscope: GaAsP Spectral Detection, Specs, Refurbished Pricing
Refurbished laser scanning confocals › Zeiss LSM 780
The Zeiss LSM 780 was Zeiss's high-end point-scanning confocal from 2010 to about 2015. Its defining feature is the 32-channel GaAsP QUASAR spectral detector, which gives it far higher sensitivity than the PMT-based LSM 710 it sits beside, and makes it a strong platform for low-light live-cell imaging, spectral unmixing and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). It supports up to ten laser lines and mounts on the Axio Observer Z1 inverted or Axio Imager Z2 upright stand.
Coastal has a refurbished Zeiss LSM 780 in stock at $160,000, on the Axio Observer Z1 with phase contrast and fluorescence, tested in our Newport, RI shop and guaranteed installable by our engineers.

What to check before buying a used LSM 780
- Laser sources. Many LSM 780s carry an argon multi-line laser (458, 488, 514 nm) that has finite tube life. Ask for current argon power and whether it has been replaced; diode and HeNe lines are less of a concern.
- GaAsP detector. Confirm the 32-channel array is the GaAsP version (this is what separates the 780 from the 710) and ask for a recent sensitivity check.
- Workstation and ZEN black. The system should include its ZEN license, dongle and a working workstation; Windows 7 era PCs are common and Coastal can supply a refurbished replacement.
- Electronics age. The LSM 780 is now a discontinued system. A Coastal service contract with access to spare parts protects the investment.
LSM 780 vs LSM 710, 880 and 980
| Model | Years | Spectral detector | Airyscan | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LSM 710 | 2007 to 2014 | 32-channel PMT | No | Same optics, lower sensitivity |
| LSM 780 | 2010 to 2015 | 32-channel GaAsP | No | Best value for spectral and FCS work |
| LSM 880 | 2014 to 2019 | 32-channel GaAsP | Airyscan 1 | Adds super-resolution and FAST mode |
| LSM 980 | 2019 on | 32-channel GaAsP, NIR option | Airyscan 2 | Current flagship |
Service, parts and support
Coastal services the full Zeiss LSM line, including the LSM 780 and LSM 710, with access to spare parts and working reference systems for discontinued models. Service contracts cover annual PM, laser alignment and priority repair. Refurbished LSM 780 systems from Coastal are guaranteed installable, and we buy and take trade-ins on LSM 780 and 710 systems.
Zeiss LSM 780 questions
How much does a used Zeiss LSM 780 cost?
Coastal's refurbished LSM 780 on the Axio Observer Z1 is $160,000, configured and installed. Laser lines, objectives and incubation are quoted to your application.
LSM 780 or LSM 800 with Airyscan?
Choose the LSM 780 for spectral imaging, many laser lines, FCS or very dim samples; its GaAsP spectral detector is still excellent. Choose the LSM 800 with Airyscan for resolution beyond the diffraction limit and a smaller footprint. Coastal stocks both and will quote them side by side.
Does Zeiss still support the LSM 780?
The LSM 780 is discontinued and factory support is winding down. Coastal services it independently and writes service contracts for discontinued LSM systems. See the LSM end of support guide.
Can the LSM 780 do multiphoton imaging?
Yes, in the LSM 780 NLO configuration with a Ti:Sapphire or similar femtosecond laser and non-descanned detectors. Ask us about NLO availability.
