Zeiss LSM End of Support: What to Do With an LSM 510, 700, 710 or 780
Zeiss LSM confocal service › End of support guide
Zeiss retires LSM confocal generations on a rolling basis. When a model reaches end of service, Zeiss stops guaranteeing parts and factory field service for it, which usually arrives while the system still images perfectly well. This guide covers what end of support means for an LSM owner, what the real risks are on each generation, and the three options Coastal offers: keep it running under an independent service contract, trade it toward a newer confocal, or sell it.

Zeiss LSM support status by model
| Model | Sold | Status | Main service risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| LSM 310, 410, LSM 5 Pascal | 1990s to mid 2000s | End of Zeiss service | Electronics, old PCs, argon lasers; Coastal supports from working reference systems |
| LSM 510, 510 META, 510 NLO | 1998 to 2009 | End of Zeiss service | Argon and HeNe lasers, scanner electronics, Windows XP workstations |
| LSM 710 | 2007 to 2014 | End of Zeiss service | Argon laser, scanner electronics, ZEN black era PCs |
| LSM 780 | 2010 to 2015 | End of Zeiss service | Argon laser, GaAsP detector cooling, workstation |
| LSM 700 | 2008 to 2015 | No longer sold new; still supported by Zeiss | Workstation age, 405 nm diode, VSD electronics |
| LSM 800 | 2015 to 2019 | Replaced by LSM 900; still supported | Shares ZEN blue platform with current systems; parts remain available |
| LSM 880 | 2014 to 2019 | Replaced by LSM 980; still supported | Airyscan 1 detector alignment |
| LSM 900, LSM 980 | 2019 on | Current | Full factory support; Coastal contracts as a lower-cost option |
Zeiss publishes its own end-of-service dates and they change; confirm the current status of your serial number with Zeiss. Coastal's service does not depend on that status.
What end of support actually changes
- Parts. Zeiss no longer stocks replacement boards, detectors and lasers for the model. Independent providers like Coastal keep their own stock, source from decommissioned systems and have working reference units to test against.
- Field service. Zeiss engineers may decline a service call or quote only time and materials. Coastal engineers continue to service every LSM generation on site.
- Software. ZEN black and older ZEN blue versions keep working, but they tie you to old Windows versions. Coastal supplies refurbished workstations with the right OS and drivers.
- Value. A discontinued LSM still holds resale value as long as it images well and has its license, dongle and objectives. Waiting until it fails lowers the trade-in value.
Option 1: keep it running on a Coastal service contract
Coastal writes one to three year service contracts for discontinued LSM systems. Each includes an annual preventive maintenance visit with alignment to factory specification, a laser alignment and beam path check, backup of system and configuration files, priority emergency service and labor, travel and parts. Optional coverage adds external lasers and workstation or operating system upgrades. This is usually the right answer for an LSM 510, 710 or 780 that still meets the lab's needs.
Option 2: trade it toward a newer confocal
Coastal takes any Zeiss LSM in trade toward a refurbished LSM 800, LSM 980, a Leica or Olympus confocal, or a new CrestOptics spinning disk mounted on your existing Axio Observer stand. The last option is often the least expensive route to a modern confocal because the stand, objectives and incubation stay in place. Our engineers handle the de-install.
Option 3: sell it
If the lab is closing or moving to a core, Coastal makes outright offers on working and non-working LSM systems and arranges de-installation and crating. Send the model, stand, laser lines, software version and any current errors for a quote.
Common questions
Zeiss told us our LSM 710 is end of service. Can it still be repaired?
Yes. Coastal services the LSM 710 and every other LSM generation with its own parts stock and working reference systems. Most repairs on these systems are lasers, scanner electronics and workstations, all of which we handle.
How long will parts be available for discontinued LSMs?
Coastal sources parts from decommissioned systems and keeps a stock for the models it supports, so availability depends on the part rather than a date. Lasers and workstations are replaceable with current equivalents; scan head electronics are the components that benefit most from a contract with parts coverage.
Is it worth putting money into an LSM 510?
Sometimes. If the lab needs a basic confocal and the scan head is healthy, a laser and workstation refresh can buy years of use for far less than a replacement. If the detectors or scanner electronics are failing, a trade toward a refurbished LSM 700 or LSM 800 is usually the better spend.
