Zeiss LSM 700 Confocal Microscope: Specs, Support Status, Refurbished Pricing
Refurbished laser scanning confocals › Zeiss LSM 700
The Zeiss LSM 700 is a compact two-channel laser scanning confocal sold from 2008 to about 2015. It uses up to four solid-state lasers (405, 488, 555 and 639 nm), two PMT detectors separated by a variable secondary dichroic (VSD) instead of filter wheels, and runs on ZEN black. It mounts on the Axio Observer Z1 inverted or Axio Imager upright stand. Because it is simple, reliable and cheap to run, the LSM 700 remains the lowest-cost way for a lab to own a Zeiss confocal.
Coastal has 4 refurbished Zeiss LSM 700 systems in stock at $54,750 each, all on the Axio Observer Z1 with optional Definite Focus, tested in our Newport, RI shop and guaranteed installable by our engineers.

What to check before buying a used LSM 700
- Laser lines. Many LSM 700s shipped with two or three lasers. Confirm which of 405, 488, 555 and 639 nm are fitted and that each reaches rated power.
- Workstation and ZEN. The original PCs are old. Ask whether the system comes with a working workstation, ZEN black license and the dongle, or whether Coastal will supply a refurbished PC.
- Stand generation. The Axio Observer Z1 is motorized; Definite Focus (1 or 2) is a worthwhile option for time-lapse work.
- Objectives. Plan-Apochromat 20x/0.8, 40x/1.3 oil and 63x/1.4 oil are the usual set; make sure they are included or quoted.
- Support plan. Zeiss no longer sells the LSM 700 new but still supports it. Compare a Zeiss plan with a Coastal service contract, which continues after factory support ends; see the LSM end of support guide.
LSM 700 vs LSM 710, 780 and 800
| Model | Years | Detection | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| LSM 700 | 2008 to 2015 | 2 PMT, VSD | Routine 2 to 4 color fixed and live imaging on a budget |
| LSM 710 | 2007 to 2014 | 32+2 spectral (QUASAR), PMT | Spectral unmixing, more laser lines |
| LSM 780 | 2010 to 2015 | 32+2 spectral, GaAsP | Low-light, FCS and spectral work |
| LSM 800 | 2015 to 2019 | 2 GaAsP, Airyscan option | Super-resolution on a compact system |
Service, parts and support
Coastal services the full Zeiss LSM line, including the LSM 700 and older LSM 5 and 510 systems, with access to spare parts and working reference systems. Service contracts cover annual PM, laser alignment and priority repair. Refurbished LSM 700 systems from Coastal are guaranteed installable, and we buy and take trade-ins on LSM 700 systems.
Zeiss LSM 700 questions
How much does a used Zeiss LSM 700 cost?
Coastal's refurbished LSM 700 systems on the Axio Observer Z1 are $54,750 each, configured and installed. Objectives, stage and incubation are quoted to your application.
Is the LSM 700 still worth buying?
For routine two to four color imaging, yes. It is a straightforward, reliable confocal with cheap solid-state lasers, and at this price it is often the difference between a lab owning a confocal and booking core time. If you need spectral detection or super-resolution, look at the LSM 780 or LSM 800 instead.
Does Zeiss still support the LSM 700?
Yes. Zeiss no longer sells the LSM 700 new but still provides factory service for it. Coastal services it as a lower-cost independent option, with its own parts stock, and keeps servicing it after Zeiss support ends.
Can the LSM 700 be upgraded to Airyscan?
No. Airyscan requires the LSM 800 generation scan head and electronics. Coastal takes LSM 700 trade-ins toward an LSM 800 or 900 with Airyscan.
