Zeiss LSM 800 Confocal Microscope: Specs, Airyscan, Refurbished Pricing
Refurbished laser scanning confocals › Zeiss LSM 800
The Zeiss LSM 800 is a compact laser scanning confocal introduced in 2015 and built on the Axio Observer 7 inverted or Axio Imager 2 upright stand. It uses up to four solid-state diode lasers (405, 488, 561 and 640 nm), two GaAsP detectors with a transmitted-light detector option, and runs on ZEN blue. The Airyscan option adds a 32-element area detector for roughly 1.7x better resolution and higher signal to noise than a standard pinhole, which is why most labs shopping for an LSM 800 look for the Airyscan version.
Coastal has 2 refurbished Zeiss LSM 800 systems in stock, from $114,750, one with Airyscan. Both are configured on the Axio Observer 7 with motorized fluorescence and phase contrast, run in our Newport, RI confocal showroom, and are guaranteed installable by our engineers.

- Up to four diode lasers: 405, 488, 561 and 640 nm
- Airyscan option: 32-channel GaAsP area detector, super-resolution (SR) and fast (FAST) modes
- Scan field up to 2048 x 2048 pixels, galvo scanner, up to 8x zoom
- Stands: Axio Observer 7 (inverted) or Axio Imager 2 (upright); Definite Focus 2 optional on the Observer
- Software: ZEN blue 2.x and later; ZEN Connect and Airyscan processing modules
- Replaced by the LSM 900 (2019); scan head and software are a direct lineage, which keeps ZEN and parts support strong

Each listing's Included section is what ships. Objectives, stage, incubation and cameras vary by unit and are quoted to your application, so read the product page before comparing prices. Sold units leave the site automatically; if the table is empty, ask us, as LSM 800 systems come through regularly.
What to check before buying a used LSM 800
- Laser hours and lines. Diode lasers are long-lived, but confirm all four lines fire and that the 405 nm line, which ages fastest, has adequate power.
- Airyscan detector health. Ask for a current Airyscan alignment and an SR-mode image of beads. A good detector alignment is the difference between 120 nm resolution and a standard confocal.
- ZEN license and PC. The system should come with its ZEN blue license, Airyscan processing module and a working acquisition workstation. Replacement licenses are expensive.
- Objectives. Airyscan performs best with Plan-Apochromat 40x/1.3 and 63x/1.4 oil objectives. Make sure the objectives you need are included or quoted.
- Definite Focus. Useful for time-lapse work; check whether the unit has Definite Focus 2 or 3 fitted.
LSM 800 vs LSM 700, 900 and 980
| Model | Years | Detection | Airyscan | Typical refurbished price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LSM 700 | 2008 to 2015 | 2 PMT, VSD beam splitter | No | Lowest cost entry to Zeiss confocal |
| LSM 800 | 2015 to 2019 | 2 GaAsP | Optional (Airyscan 1) | Mid range; best value for Airyscan |
| LSM 900 | 2019 on | 2 GaAsP | Optional (Airyscan 2, Multiplex) | Higher; still in Zeiss production |
| LSM 980 | 2019 on | 32+2 GaAsP spectral | Optional (Airyscan 2, up to 8Y) | Highest; current flagship |

Zeiss LSM 800 questions
How much does a used Zeiss LSM 800 cost?
Coastal's current refurbished LSM 800 systems on the Axio Observer 7 are $114,750 without Airyscan and $134,750 with Airyscan, configured and installed. Final price depends on objectives, stage, incubation and software modules.
Is the LSM 800 still supported by Zeiss?
The LSM 800 was replaced by the LSM 900 in 2019, but it shares the ZEN blue platform and much of its hardware with current systems, so parts and software support remain strong. Coastal services it independently of Zeiss factory support.
Can I add Airyscan to an LSM 800 that does not have it?
It is possible in principle but the detector, processing module and alignment make it expensive. Buying a unit that already has Airyscan is usually the better path. Ask us about current Airyscan units.
What is the difference between the LSM 800 and the LSM 900?
The LSM 900 is the successor with Airyscan 2, which adds the Multiplex mode for faster super-resolution imaging, and newer electronics. Detection on both is two GaAsP channels. For fixed-cell work the LSM 800 with Airyscan delivers very similar images at a lower price.
